Image Specifications

Will someone proof my image before printing? How do I know how it will print?

Yes, every image submitted is reviewed by our skilled technicians before printing. We ensure that the resolution and quality of your image meet our standards to produce a high-quality print. If there are any issues, we will reach out to you before proceeding. For those with a NMFA Pro account, we offer additional services to preview how your high-resolution images will translate to print. Such as, sending a free sample pack which includes examples of our finishes and color quality.

What types of files can I upload? What is recommended?

Our online uploader is compatible with lower resolution JPEG images, which is perfect for printing a variety of personal photographs such as family photos, holiday snapshots, cherished memories, event highlights, or casual portraits. This user-friendly option caters well to those looking to bring everyday moments to life in print.

For professionals looking to print with higher resolution .tiff files to preserve the utmost quality of their work—be it for gallery displays, client projects, or fine art reproductions—a NMFA Pro Account is required. This specialized account provides the means to order using the professional-grade files your work deserves. You will be sent instructions on how to order using .tiff files in your welcome email after being approved for a NMFA Pro Account.

JPEG :

  • Smaller File Sizes: JPEG files are typically smaller in size compared to TIFF files, as they use lossy compression. This can be beneficial for easier storage and sharing of images, especially online.
  • Widely Supported: JPEG is a universally supported image format, making it convenient for sharing images across various platforms, devices, and websites.
  • Quick Preview: JPEG files can be useful for quick previews and proofing purposes before committing to the final print, as they load faster in most image viewing software.

TIFF :

  • Lossless Compression: TIFF files are typically uncompressed or use lossless compression, which means they do not sacrifice image quality. This is crucial for preserving all the image data and ensuring the highest possible print quality.
  • High-Quality Resolution: TIFF files support high bit depths, which means they can store a vast amount of color and tonal information. This is important for fine art prints, as it allows for the finest details and smooth color gradients to be retained in the final output.
  • Flexibility: TIFF files are suitable for storing various types of image data, including multiple layers, channels, and color profiles. This makes them versatile for professional image editing and retouching processes.
  • No Loss of Image Data: When you save an image as a TIFF, there is no loss of image data due to compression or quality reduction, making it ideal for preserving the integrity of your photographs.

While JPEG files have their merits, TIFF files are preferred for fine art printing due to their lossless nature and ability to maintain the highest image quality. When the goal is to produce the finest prints with the most detail and color accuracy, TIFF is the recommended format. However, if you need to share or preview images before printing, JPEGs can serve that purpose effectively, but it's essential to keep a master TIFF version for the actual printing process to ensure the best results.

What color space do you recommend?

Adobe RGB (1998) is a popular choice for fine art printing due to several advantages it offers over other color spaces:

  • Wider Color Gamut: Adobe RGB has a larger color gamut compared to the standard sRGB color space. It can reproduce a broader range of colors, which is particularly beneficial for achieving vibrant and high-quality prints.
  • Suitable for Professional Workflows: Adobe RGB is commonly preferred by photographers and professionals who have control over their entire workflow, from image capture to print. It's an excellent choice for those working with high-end equipment and seeking the highest color fidelity.
  • Smooth Transitions: Adobe RGB provides smoother and more gradual transitions between colors, which can result in more visually appealing prints, especially for images with subtle color gradients and transitions.
  • Preservation of Color Detail: When using Adobe RGB, you can maintain a greater level of detail in the highlights and shadows of your images, allowing for a more faithful reproduction of the original scene.
  • Compatibility: Adobe RGB is widely supported by professional photo editing software and printers, making it a practical choice for photographers and fine art printing labs.
  • Versatility: Adobe RGB strikes a balance between color accuracy and practicality, making it suitable for a wide range of printing applications, including fine art photography, graphic design, and professional photography.

Overall, Adobe RGB (1998) is favored for its ability to preserve a broader spectrum of colors and is the color space of choice for many professionals engaged in the fine art printing industry, as it provides superior color accuracy and quality for their prints.

How large do my images need to be?

The required size of your images for printing is dependent on both personal preference and the intended viewing distance. Generally, the closer viewers are to the image, the higher the resolution should be to maintain clarity and detail. We will always proof your images to ensure they meet the quality standards for the size at which they are ordered. We employ specific methods to determine if an image is suitable for printing at the requested dimensions. Since it is very file-dependent, if there are any concerns about the resolution or the potential quality of the final print, our team will communicate with you to discuss the best options. If you are unsure how large you can print your image, please reach out to us at orders@nmfa.io prior to placing your order and we will give you our recommendation.

Should I resize or crop my images before uploading?

No, you should not resize or crop your images before uploading, unless you are doing so for specific sharpening purposes. We will handle the resizing of your image to ensure it's optimized for the dimensions it will be printed at. Resizing images on your own can result in unnecessarily large file sizes, leading to longer upload times for you and increased download times for us. If you're using our online uploader for low-resolution JPEGs, our built-in crop tool will help you to crop your images as needed. For NMFA Pros using our .tiff ordering system, it’s crucial to follow the provided instructions for cropping your images to avoid any delays in production.

Can I add a watermark to my photos?

Yes, you can add a watermark or a digital signature to your photos, and we recommend the use of a digital signature for added personalization on your prints. When you do add a signature, we advise placing it in the bottom left or bottom right corner of the image, ensuring there's sufficient space from the edges to prevent it from being trimmed off during the printing process. Please note that for Metal and Acrylic prints, which require a bleed, up to 1/8" of the image may be trimmed off, so positioning your signature accordingly is important to ensure it remains visible on the final print.

How do I sign my prints?

For signing your prints, you can sign directly on the surface of Metal, Canvas, Fine Art, and Photo prints. However, for Acrylic prints, we recommend signing on the back rather than the front to maintain the print's aesthetic integrity. If your print is being dropshipped to a customer, a digital signature is advisable for a consistent and professional presentation. If you wish to provide a Certificate of Authenticity, it should be handled separately as it will need to be shipped directly by you.

Color Management/Proofing

Do you provide ICC profiles for soft proofing?

We don't typically share ICC profiles because accurate soft proofing hinges on having a calibrated monitor matching our settings (D50 color space, 120 lumens). Each monitor can display colors a little differently, and without matching calibration, the use of our ICC profiles could result in inaccurate colors and expectations in the final print. We recommend calibrating your monitor to these standards and using a monitor that displays 100% of Adobe 1998 RGB!

We recommend exporting your images with the following settings -

Adobe 1998 RGB

16-bit

.tiff

How can I calibrate my monitor correctly?

Calibrating Your Monitor for Color Accuracy:

1. Monitor Selection:

  • Choose a high-quality monitor that offers a wide color gamut. Ideally, select a monitor that can display 99%-100% of the Adobe RGB 1998 color space for accurate color representation.

2. Recommended Monitors:

  • Consider monitors like the Dell UltraSharp UP2718Q, BenQ SQ272Q or the ASUS ProArt PA32UCX for their excellent color accuracy and Adobe RGB coverage.

3. Calibration Device:

  • Invest in a reliable monitor calibration device such as the Calibrite Display Pro. This tool ensures accurate and consistent color representation.

4. Ambient Lighting:

  • Calibrate your monitor in a well-lit room, preferably using controlled lighting conditions. Avoid glare or direct sunlight on the screen.

5. Install Calibration Software:

  • Install the software that comes with your calibration device. Follow the on-screen instructions for a proper setup.

6. Connect the Calibration Device:

  • Connect the calibration device to your computer and place it in the center of the monitor. Follow any additional instructions provided by the calibration software.

7. Run Calibration Software:

  • Launch the calibration software and follow the steps to measure and adjust the color settings. The software will guide you through the process, displaying a series of color patches.

8. Target Settings:

  • Set the calibration target to D50, gamma to 2.2, lumens to 120. This ensures that your monitor is calibrated to our lab's color space.

9. Save Calibration Profile: - Save the generated calibration profile. This profile contains the precise color settings for your monitor and should be loaded each time you start your computer.

10. Regular Calibration: - Calibrate your monitor regularly, at least once a month, to account for any changes in ambient lighting or monitor performance.

By following these steps and investing in a quality monitor and calibration device, you'll be able to achieve optimal color accuracy for your fine art photography prints.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to us at orders@nmfa.io. We're here to ensure your printing experience is as exceptional as your artwork!
